Beech Class had a wonderful day on Friday doing some dancing, beatboxing and lots of other movement activities. We put on a wonderful performance at the end of the day!
Beech class made the most of the sunshine today, using classification keys to identify different plants in the garden. They are enjoying their current science topic- living things, evolution and inheritance.
Beech Class enjoyed learning more about Islam with their workshop with Yasmien. We enjoyed copying Arabic writing, making and eating chapatis and dressing up in traditional clothes. We also enjoyed talking more to Yasmien and asking questions about Islam.
Children from Beech Class represented school today in a rearranged dodgeball competition at Carnforth High School. Both teams (the NK Piranhas and the NK Tigers) played really well. For some children it was the first time they had played for a school team.
The NK Piranhas finished in 3rd place overall so collected bronze medals.
One of our players was awarded ‘Player Of The Tournament’ for showing exceptional sportsmanship and honesty. He collected an individual trophy. Well done to everyone involved.
We did really well at the swimming gala on Wednesday, claiming second place. Well done to all those involved!
Every two weeks, we link two classes together to do shared reading where younger children read their reading books to older children or older children read story books aloud to younger children. Beech and Chestnut get together and Sycamore and Oak. We love to do this as it is fun to share books and spend time with children from other classes reading to each other.
Lizzi Collinge, County Councillor, visited KS2 classes and explained about the work on the County Council and generally about our democratic political system. The children in both Beech Class and Sycamore Class were invited to come up with their own ideas for laws. They suggested laws about: dropping litter, taxes, limiting how much wealth someone can have, limiting people to owning one house, reducing the price of food, looking after the environment, making all food free, allowing people to vote from 16, having more control over genetic modification, etc.
We also debated some of our ideas within our classes. We looked at photographs of the County Council chambers and learned about the process of running the council and what sorts of things councillors deal with. We asked lots of good questions about her role and what inspired her to be a councillor too.
Beech Class continued their work on sculpture in art by making their own Christmas mobiles. We made shapes out of clay using cutters. We added patterns using lace and many other things that imprinted texture into the clay. We then painted them with watercolours and coated them with PVA, adding glitter as we did this. Finally, we attached glitter string and attached our shapes to our driftwood hangers. We had to pay attention to balancing our mobiles by positioning our dangling shapes carefully, this linked to our work on forces in science this term.
