Nether Kellet Primary School

Curriculum Overview

At Nether Kellet, we are committed to developing our children personally, socially and academically. We want to develop lifelong learners who:

-ask questions,

-communicate effectively,

-cooperate with others,

-make decisions,

-work with independence,

-use creativity,

-show resilience,

-take risks,

-Persevere with tasks.

These dispositions and attitudes are embedded across all aspects of our curriculum and referred to in school as our Planet Inspiration characters.

We are a Forest School and are passionate about learning outdoors. Our nature trail, cross curricular orienteering course and outdoor classroom are used to develop children’s knowledge and love of nature whilst stimulating them to develop knowledge and understanding across all subjects outside the classroom. We have a cookery room where children cook a variety of foods including produce from our garden.

Children at Nether Kellet are actively taught to have outstanding behaviour for learning through our school Rights and Responsibilities. We use approaches to develop a growth mindset in our learners, teaching them that mistakes are an important part of the learning process and achievement can change as a result of effort, perseverance and practice.

We want our children to appreciate diversity and difference, both where they live and in the wider world. Daily Global Awareness sessions to develop the children’s understanding of the rich and varied cultures that form part of today’s world. Alongside educating our children about British Values, we uphold the importance that being a global citizen brings. We teach children to make educated and informed choices through Philosophy for Children, valuing the importance of listening to others, being prepared and willing to change their mind as new information is presented and respecting difference of opinion.

What we teach…

Reception children follow the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage. For more information of what this looks like please head to the Oak Class page.

Children in Years 1 to 6 follow the statutory guidance outlined in The National Curriculum.

The aim of this approach is for learning to be more meaningful and to exploit opportunities for reinforcement. Creative arts and a vibrant learning environment are essential parts of our themes and each theme is enhanced through bringing in appropriate visitors and taking children off site on educational visits.

We also focus on achieving the highest possible standards for all our children in the fundamentals of English, maths and science. We are well equipped in computer technology too and combine high tech learning with our forest school status where we get back to nature! Our curriculum is further enriched by visiting teachers, artists, musicians and sports teachers.

If you would like more information about our curriculum please contact either Nicki Bradbury, head teacher or Vicky Perry, Curriculum Manager and Deputy Head.

We follow the National Curriculum in all subjects apart from RE where we follow the Lancashire Agreed Syllabus.
